How it works
A stay-at-home parent's life insurance sizing starts from an uncomfortable accounting fact: the parent who earns no paycheck still produces enormous replaceable economic value, and families that insure only earners leave the household exposed to its largest unbudgeted liability. The method prices the parent's contributions at genuine market rates — the daycare, nanny-share or after-school care the family would actually buy, plus cooking, cleaning, scheduling and transport at local service rates. Those annual contributions are then inflated forward at care-specific inflation, which has outrun headline CPI for decades, across every year until the youngest child reaches independence. Discounting the stream back at a safe return converts it into a lump-sum equivalent: the capital that, invested conservatively, would reproduce the parent's economic contribution if it vanished tomorrow. Adding final-expense room and subtracting any coverage already on the parent yields the recommended additional face amount. The result routinely surprises households that carry a token fifty thousand on the homemaker: replacing the work, not the wages, frequently justifies several hundred thousand dollars of cover. Premiums for that coverage are modest precisely because the parent is typically young and healthy — the asymmetry that makes this the most underbought policy in family finance. Rates vary by insurer and state; the valuation logic does not.Formula
value = sum over each year of (childcare + services) x 12 x (1 + inflation)^t / (1 + discount)^t | additional cover = value - existing coverage
Tips
- Price the care you would genuinely buy — a nanny share, not an imaginary au pair.
- Anchor the horizon to the youngest child; fourteen years of toddler care dwarfs four of teen logistics.
- Insure both parents to similar economic amounts — the survivor faces the same replacement bill.
- Re-run after every birth; each child stretches the dependency window and lifts the number.
- If budget-constrained, prioritize longer duration over extra face on the earner's policy.
