A complete guide to insurance: what you need, how much to buy, and how to avoid overpaying for coverage you do not need.
Insurance is a risk transfer mechanism. You pay a predictable premium so an insurance company assumes the financial risk of a catastrophic event. Without insurance, a single accident, illness, or lawsuit can wipe out decades of savings. The goal is not to insure everything — it is to insure against the risks you cannot afford to absorb yourself.
The insurance industry is designed to be confusing. Insurers profit from complexity because confused customers overpay or buy the wrong products. This guide cuts through the noise and tells you exactly what you need, what you can skip, and how to calculate the right coverage amount.
Term life insurance covers you for a specific period (10, 20, or 30 years). If you die during that term, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If you outlive the term, the policy expires. Term life is 10-20x cheaper than whole life insurance and is the right choice for 95% of people.
A common rule of thumb is 10-12x your annual income, but this oversimplifies. A more accurate calculation considers: (1) your income replacement needs until your youngest child is independent, (2) your outstanding debts (mortgage, student loans), (3) future education costs, and (4) final expenses. Use our Life Insurance Needs Calculator for a personalized recommendation.
Health insurance is the most complex and important insurance product for most people. The right plan saves you thousands in medical bills. The wrong plan exposes you to catastrophic out-of-pocket costs.
| Term | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Monthly payment to keep insurance active | Budget this as a fixed cost |
| Deductible | Amount you pay before insurance kicks in | Higher deductible = lower premium |
| Copay | Fixed amount you pay per visit or prescription | Predictable cost for routine care |
| Coinsurance | Percentage you pay after meeting deductible | e.g., you pay 20%, insurer pays 80% |
| Out-of-pocket max | Most you will pay in a year | Your true worst-case cost |
| Network | Doctors/hospitals the insurer has agreements with | Out-of-network costs can be 2-3x higher |
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is the most tax-advantaged account in existence. Contributions are tax-deductible, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for medical expenses are tax-free. If you have a high-deductible health plan, max out your HSA ($4,150 individual / $8,300 family in 2024) before investing in any other account. After age 65, you can withdraw for any purpose (taxed as income, like a traditional IRA).
Auto insurance is required by law in most states, but the minimum coverage is almost never enough. A single serious accident can result in a $500,000+ liability judgment. The minimum $25,000 coverage would leave you personally responsible for the remaining $475,000.
Use our Auto Insurance Calculator to estimate your annual premium based on your vehicle, driving record, and coverage level.
Homeowners insurance covers your dwelling, personal property, and liability. Renters insurance covers your personal property and liability. Both are affordable and essential.
More than 1 in 4 of today's 20-year-olds will experience a disability before retirement age. Disability insurance replaces 60-70% of your income if you cannot work due to illness or injury. It is the most overlooked insurance type, yet it protects your most valuable asset: your ability to earn.
Get short-term disability through your employer if available. For long-term coverage, look for an own-occupation policy that pays if you cannot perform YOUR specific job, not just any job. Use our Disability Insurance Calculator to estimate how much coverage you need.
An umbrella policy provides $1-5 million in additional liability coverage on top of your auto and homeowners policies. It costs $150-300 per year for $1 million in coverage. If you have any assets to protect (a home, savings, investments), an umbrella policy is the best value in insurance.
