Headlines quote $7,500 federal credits and four-figure state rebates as if automatic; reality attaches income ceilings, MSRP caps, battery-sourcing rules and point-of-sale mechanics that decide whether each dollar is real for you. This calculator frames the arithmetic honestly: it adds your sales tax and documentation fees, subtracts the federal and state amounts you enter as claimable, and returns the true drive-away figure alongside the effective percentage the incentives knock off the sticker. On the default case — a $42,500 EV with $9,500 of combined credits and 6.5% tax — the net lands near $36,560, an effective 22% discount that transforms the comparison against comparable gasoline models. The hedging matters as much as the math: credits phase to zero above household-income thresholds, vehicles above MSRP caps are excluded entirely, and lease structures often capture incentives differently through capitalized-cost reductions.
