How it works
Wedding cancellation insurance is an event policy that repays forfeited deposits and rescheduling costs when illness, severe weather, military duty or venue failure stops the celebration - with liability sections covering injuries or property damage at the event itself. The worth-it question is expected value, because unlike a house fire most weddings proceed untouched: the premium is priced knowing the large majority of policyholders collect nothing. This calculator builds expected recovery from three streams - the non-refundable stake times cancellation odds, that stake times postponement odds scaled by what a rescheduled date genuinely loses, and vendor-failure odds times a typical lost deposit - then divides by the premium. Ratios near or above 100% describe fairly priced risk; ratios far below mean you are buying certainty, which remains legitimate if a $20,000 forfeiture would wreck household finances before the marriage begins. Honesty about inputs matters more than precision: weather-prone outdoor venues, elderly relatives travelling far and thin vendor contracts push the odds upward, and the verdict follows them. What no policy covers is cold feet; what the good ones buy is the ability to sign vendors without holding every dollar breathless until the last dance.Formula
expected recovery = stake x cancel odds + stake x postpone odds x repay% + vendor odds x vendor loss | value ratio = expected recovery / premium
Tips
- Only the non-refundable slice is truly at risk - negotiate refundable terms before buying cover around them.
- Liability and liquor-liability sections are often required by venues; price them separately from cancellation.
- Postponement cover matters more than cancellation on weather-risk dates - rescheduling salvages most deposits.
- Collect the odds honestly: outdoor ceremonies, winter dates and far-travelling guests all raise them.
- Below roughly a 70% value ratio you are buying calm rather than coverage - decide that deliberately.
