How it works
Duration between two moments is the difference of their timestamps — but humans also want calendar-aware breakdowns (years, months, days) that respect variable month lengths and leap years. The engine validates both date-times, converts each to minutes-from-epoch (or an equivalent ordinal), and subtracts to produce total minutes, hours and days. The Y-M-D breakdown borrows from the start date toward the end date without exceeding calendar units: count full years until the anniversary would pass the end, then months, then days, then hours and minutes. Worked example: January 1, 2026 9:00 AM to September 15, 2026 5:30 PM. Calendar span: 8 months 14 days from Jan 1 to Sep 15, plus 8 hours 30 minutes intraday. Total minutes = 257×24×60 + 8×60 + 30 = 371,130 minutes ≈ 257.35 days. Total hours ≈ 6,179. Total days reports the fractional day count including time-of-day. Use total minutes for precise billing or SLA calculations; use the Y-M-D breakdown for human-readable project timelines. Daylight saving changes are not modeled unless you enter local wall-clock times aware of DST — for legal deadlines across zones, convert to UTC first.
Formula
Total minutes = end timestamp − start timestamp | Breakdown = borrow years, months, days, hours, minutes sequentially
Tips
- Use 24-hour time for unambiguous entry — 5:30 PM = hour 17, minute 30.
- For business days only (excluding weekends), this tool overcounts — filter manually.
- Cross-timezone deadlines: convert both instants to UTC before subtracting.
- The Y-M-D breakdown and total days differ slightly when times-of-day are not midnight.
Frequently asked questions
- How many days from January 1 to September 15, 2026?
- 257 full days at midnight-to-midnight; with 9:00 AM start and 5:30 PM end the total is about 257.35 days (6,179 hours).
- Does this include the start day?
- Duration is end minus start — elapsed time between the two instants, not inclusive calendar-day counting. Jan 1 9 AM to Jan 2 9 AM is exactly 24 hours (1 day).
- How is the months breakdown calculated?
- Full calendar months from the start date without exceeding the end date, then remaining days. Variable month lengths and leap years are respected.
- Can I calculate hours between two times on the same day?
- Yes — set the same year, month and day on both sides, differing only in hour and minute. Total hours and minutes appear in the outputs.
