A fair bill split starts with three layers — food, tax and tip — and ends with one number per person. This calculator adds the layers in the right order: tax is applied to the subtotal, the tip is applied to whichever base your table chooses (the pre-tax subtotal by default, the post-tax total if you tip on the receipt figure), and the sum divides evenly across the group. Equal splitting is the social default because itemised dividing costs more in awkwardness than the few dollars it recovers; the person who ordered the steak usually knows, and picks up the difference another time. What the calculator removes is the arithmetic argument at the table: everyone sees the same per-person number, which the group can round up together if clean figures beat exact cents. Do you tip on tax?
Strictly no — the fair baseline tips on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax goes to the government, not the server. On an $148.50 bill at 8.5% tax the difference is under $3, which is why most tables simply tip on the receipt total. Either choice is defensible if it is deliberate.
How do you split a bill evenly in a big group?
Agree on the tip percentage first, apply it once, divide by heads, and round up. For parties over six, have one person pay the whole card and collect transfers at the table — chasing six separate cards through a POS system is how restaurants lose patience with large groups.
Is it rude to ask for separate checks?
Not if you say so before ordering. Separate checks are routine in most restaurants outside peak hours; what strains kitchens is itemised splitting after a long shared meal has already been rung as one ticket.
Should alcohol be split equally?
Only when everyone drank similarly. A table where half ordered $12 sodas should not fund a $90 wine pairings round — split the food evenly, carve out the bar tab, and divide that among those who drank it.
