How it works
A care-setting cost comparison prices the triage decision every household faces eventually: where to take a sprain, a fever, a rash or an infection. The three settings bill radically different amounts for substantially overlapping capabilities — a typical non-trauma ER visit bills near nineteen hundred dollars while urgent care handles much of the same list around one hundred ninety and telehealth under seventy — but what you actually pay depends on your plan's current state, which is why the calculator applies your remaining deductible and coinsurance share rather than quoting stickers. Early in the plan year, when the deductible stands untouched, even small visits bill nearly in full; late in the year, after major care has cleared the deductible, the same visits cost only their coinsurance slice and the gaps compress dramatically. The comparison's honest limits matter as much as its numbers. Emergency conditions — chest pain, stroke signs, severe bleeding, breathing trouble, head trauma — belong at the ER unconditionally, and no savings figure should reroute them; insurers' prudent-layperson standard covers true emergencies regardless of final diagnosis. Facility fees, imaging and labs inflate real bills past these visit-level estimates, and free-standing ERs bill hospital rates that dwarf urgent care for identical complaints. Used within its lane, though, the arithmetic is blunt: routing routine problems away from emergency departments saves households thousands annually without touching outcomes.Formula
your cost = min(billed, deductible remaining) + (billed - deductible part) x coinsurance % | compare across ER, urgent care, telehealth
Tips
- Chest pain, stroke signs, heavy bleeding or breathing trouble: ER, always — price never enters it.
- Check whether that nearby 'emergency room' is freestanding; hospital billing hides behind the signage.
- Save your plan's telehealth line in your phone before the fever starts, not during it.
- Late in the year with a cleared deductible, getting deferred care done cheaply beats waiting for January.
- Ask urgent care upfront about imaging and lab add-ons — they can triple the visit's effective cost.
